Posted on the 3rd February 2017 by Orsola Maria

Warwick Economics Summit 2017 to host Professor Alan Winfield, Professor of Robot Ethics at the University of the West of England.

Professor Alan Winfield has had a diverse career spanning four decades, across fields such as communications software, electronic engineering, and mobile robotics. This has culminated in his establishment as a leader of research in robot ethics, with Professor Winfield exploring the intelligence capabilities behind robots, and the resulting ethical questions they pose.

After completing his PhD at the University of Hull in 1984, Professor Winfield co-founded APD Communications Ltd, which played a key role in providing software for mobile radio data systems, notably in the public sector. Whilst leaving the company in 1992 to take up the position of Hewlett-Packard Professor of Electronic Engineering at the University of the West of England, Bristol, he remains a non-executive director. Professor Winfield is currently director of the UWE’s Science Communications Unit and helped co-found the Intelligent Autonomous Systems, which in 2005 was relaunched jointly with the University of Bristol as the Bristol Robotics Laboratory, where he currently conducts his research.
