Our fourth speaker for WES 2015 is Dermot Nolan

Dermot Nolan is an economist & executive who currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Ofgem, the UK energy market regulator. In a challenging time for the energy industry, Nolan is one of the UK’s most prominent CEOs in the field, and his aims are to promote an energy market that is more competitive and works better for consumers.

After graduating with a degree from Trinity College, Dublin, Nolan went on to complete both his Masters and Doctorate degrees in Economics at Yale University. Before joining Ofgem in March 2014, Mr Nolan was the chairman of Ireland’s Commission for Energy Regulation (CER), which is responsible for energy and energy safety regulation, and works closely with its Northern Irish equivalent in the joint regulation of the Single Energy Market.

Before becoming Chair in May 2011, Nolan was a Commissioner for the CER, a position he had held since 2008. Prior to this Nolan was a Senior Economic Advisor and then Director of the Retail Division at the CER. Nolan worked on competition matters in professional serves and was also Manager of the Mergers Division for the Irish Competition Authority. As an academic, Nolan lectured at the University of London, specialising in areas of market structures and firm performance.

Since assuming post at Ofgem, his recent changes include announcing a full competition investigation, price controls for network operators, and enhanced consumer engagement. As a trained economist, Nolan has extensive experience in leadership, energy regulation, market competition and the protection of consumers’ interests.
